Residential energy reduction advice … from a Licensed Professional Engineer, an AEE Certified Energy Manager and a Certified Green Building Engineer practicing in facility systems. *1, *2
Why would I do this? Why not!
We are deluged with talk about solar power, wind power, biodiesel and all sorts of alternative renewable energy sources. Yes, we need those things and effort should be applied to improve those technologies. The general media talk about energy as if it is solely an energy source problem. However, I believe we should be focusing a lot of effort on waste energy reduction and energy recycling.
Let's look at some facts. The world used an equivalent of nearly 15 terawatts of energy in 2009 *3. The tera prefix means trillion. Restated then, that is nearly 15,000,000,000,000 watts. The source of that energy includes 37% from burning oil, 25% from burning coal, 23% from burning gas, 6% from nuclear and the balance of 9% came from renewable sources *4.
I see incredible amounts of energy waste all around me. Let's start there: reduce energy waste and recycle energy when possible. If you have done nothing yet, I expect that following my advice may reduce your utility bills by 30%. Thirty percent less money out of your pocket for energy is our basic goal! If everybody reduced energy waste and recycled energy, we could turn our energy clock back many years. Don't even get me started on the implications for green house gas reductions.
